Gilbert Arenas Gives Explanation On Why He Pulled Out Guns In Wizards Locker Room

It’s been three years since the famous locker room incident that happened in Washington amongst former teammates Gilbert Arenas and JaVaris Crittenton. Gilbert’s career is far from what it was during, lets say, 2004-06, but he’s enjoying himself in Memphis right now and has found his shooting stroke as of late.

But despite all that, Arenas still gets asked about the gun incident that earned him a suspension back in ’09, and Gilbert finally gave us the real answer as to why he pulled out four guns in the locker room that life-changing day. According to the “Silent Assassin,” it all started after then-Wizards center JaVale McGee (now a Denver Nugget) beat Crittenton during an $1100 poker game. In return, Crittenton started getting heated toward McGee because 1. He just lost all that money, and 2. JaVale apparently owed $200 then-Wizards guard Earl Boynkins.

From USA Today:

“‘Pay the man his [expletive] money. You’ve got all my money,’” Arenas remembers Crittenton yelling at McGee. “So I jumped in, ‘Why you talking to your teammates like this? We family.’ That’s when [Crittenton] started coming at me. ‘[Expletive, racial slur], just because you got all money, this and this and this.’ That’s when we started going back and forth. I didn’t owe him anything. It was over a $1100 pot he just lost.”

That’s when the gun talk started. “Someone said they were going to shoot me,” Arenas says. “So since I’m one of those guys who says, ‘I want to see this happen. I want to see you actually shoot me,’ that’s where that came from. I brought four guns in and said [in a note], ‘Pick 1, so the day you want to shoot me let me know, I’ll be ready to get shot.’”

Gilbert doesn’t back down, and he certainly didn’t believe that someone from his own team was going to shoot him so he ended up doing the unthinkable in an NBA locker room: Actually bringing in four loaded guns and telling teammates that if you’re going to shoot me, pick one. Now, I’m not saying Gilbert’s a thug of any kind, but him doing what he did certainly shows that he isn’t afraid of a little confrontation from time to time.

At least now, we finally have an answer from the horses mouth.
